Oak Framing Basics - How to Make a Roof Truss
A step by step guide on how to layout, cut joints and construct a timber roof truss using traditional joints and methods.

Oak framing is a massive topic and can be quite daunting if you don't know how to get started. Everyone, with some knowledge will have an opinion about THE way to do it. Well guess what, there isn't just one way to do it. Wood work just keeps giving with new things to learn.
Here I will help break down the big things into smaller bite sized nuggets so you can tackle each of the learning challenges in a methodical way.
In this course I will discuss, timber choice, joint design, hand and power tools. As well as show you how to mark out, cut and fit the oak sections together. In particular I will take you through the process of marking out using a plumb bob.
I have chosen to build the course around making an oak roof truss. The skills learnt here are transferable to many other oak frame designs.

Stuart is a time served carpenter and joiner owning and running a busy workshop in the South West. He designs and makes bespoke, beautiful wooden items from the very small to the very large with his team of motivated and skilled staff. From cabinets and joinery, staircases and kitchen right through to the big stuff!
He is a member of The Carpenters Fellowship and The Institute of Carpenters.
Oak frames are Stuart's passion and his attention to detail and craftsmanship have won him and his team national awards and recognition.
Stuart has trained many people over the years in all aspects of wood work. His is now turning his attention to spreading that knowledge to a wider audience.
